Agriculture and Livelihoods

Livelihoods is a key thematic area in Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese. The 2023–2027 Strategic Plan focuses on five intervention areas under Goal 2: Improved and Sustainable Livelihoods, responding to SDGs 2, 8 and 13 on food security, economic growth and climate action.

Programs Under This Thematic Area

  • Central Archdiocesan Province Caritas Association (CAPCA) — supported by Caritas Denmark
  • K-MD Integrated Livelihoods Program (ILP) — funded by the Brabec family, Nebraska USA
  • K-MD Integrated Cow Program — Microfinancing partners in Africa & Gotta Have Hope Inc.
  • Coffee Program — Gotta Have Hope Inc. covering all six civil Districts

Livelihoods Objectives (2023–2027)

  • Improved food security & nutrition among targeted households in K-MD
  • Increased incomes and investments among the targeted poor and vulnerable households
  • Improved management and sustainable use of environmental resources among K-MD communities

5 Key Intervention Areas

1. Farmer Organisation Development

Train communities in group dynamics; support transformation into 5 cooperative societies; identify and train 250 community-based trainers (CBTs); support formation of 50 VSLAs; conduct Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) classes for farmers.

2. Production and Productivity

Set up demonstration plots in 10 Parishes; train farmers in Sustainable Agricultural Practices; distribute improved banana suckers, coffee seedlings and seed varieties; procure and distribute 600 heads of cattle, 1,500 pigs and 240 goats; conduct Artificial Insemination on 550 cattle and 350 pigs.

3. Marketing and Value Addition

Train farmer organisations in marketing skills and value addition technologies for coffee, maize and milk; support 5 cooperatives with crop finance (working capital); identify and train 150 marketing agents; support the Kiganda Coffee roasting and packaging project.

4. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation

Train communities in climate change mitigation practices; plant 50 acres of indigenous trees on church land in 10 Parishes; distribute 30 movable irrigation systems across 6 Deaneries; promote biogas systems, energy-saving stoves and briquette-making.

5. Advocacy and Networking

Organise annual farmers' fora at district level; network with key market chain players; engage District Local Governments (DLGs) for relevant ordinances; formalise networks with UFCVP, NYAP and ACSA.

Key Achievements (2018–2022)

  • 153 farmer groups and 9 cooperative societies formed — 7,650 members (3,061 men, 4,589 women)
  • 101 community-based trainers (CBTs) identified, trained and deployed
  • 52,800 banana suckers and 70,000 coffee seedlings distributed to 1,161 households
  • 715 heads of cattle (709 in-calf heifers + 6 bulls), 358 pigs and 194 goats distributed
  • 3 bulking stores built in Kiganda, Kassanda and Myanzi Sub Counties
  • 1,893 energy-saving stoves built at household level; 52 in schools
  • 4 movable irrigation systems distributed for year-round production
